We have booked nine square metres. How many meetings fit at once, and with what furniture?

One table done properly and a second high table with two stools; two low tables only if you squeeze. On a three by three, once walls, store and the way in are deducted, the third position will not go in. The chair decides before the plan does: the high table with stools saves room, because a stool has no arms and tucks under the top, while an armchair is wide and needs clearance to sit down and get up.

It is a congress centre and our workshop is in Spain. What has to be pinned down before drawing?

The date the organiser accepts the stand drawings for approval: it usually falls before the workshop starts, and it is that date that runs the calendar. From the technical regulations we ask in writing for the maximum build height, the permissible floor loading, whether there is a goods lift, whether anything may be hung, and what hours the build runs in; nothing about the building is assumed. For nine square metres you do not charter a lorry: a van, or a consolidated load. And the crew travels with the prior posting declaration in hand.

At ILTM Cannes the diary is closed before anyone leaves home. It is a hosted buyer event: the International Luxury Travel Market pairs every exhibitor in advance with pre-qualified luxury travel advisers, the day comes parcelled into appointments and the buyer works the stands with the schedule on a phone. On the supply side it is luxury travel: hotels and resorts, cruise lines, airlines, tourist boards, inbound operators, villas and private transport. The venue is not a fairground but a congress centre on the Croisette, the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. There are two ways in: the luxury shell scheme, the modular stand the organisers put up, or build your own, the bare plot — space only — with your own designer and contractor. The smallest bookable area is nine square metres.
