InteriHOTEL is the hotel interior design show: it does not sell to the guest or the end consumer, but to whoever signs off the project. The contract industry exhibits here — furniture, lighting, textiles, flooring and wall coverings, bathroom, outdoor and home automation, plus turnkey suppliers — and the aisles fill with interior designers, architects, design studios and the purchasing and expansion managers of hotel groups, who come looking for suppliers for a refurbishment or a new build. It is organised by the AMBIT Living Spaces cluster, successor to CENFIM, the Catalan wood and furniture technology centre, and after years in Barcelona it is now held at IFEMA Madrid. Alongside the exhibition floor there are curated areas, a talks programme and scheduled meetings between brands and interior design studios.

Here the stand is judged by people who design interiors for a living. They look at the edge of a board, at how one surface meets another, at whether the ironmongery is properly resolved: the finish is the sales argument, long before the graphics. So we work with honest materials and bespoke joinery from our own workshop, with textile, flooring and surface samples at hand height so they can be touched, and with lighting of good colour rendering, because the visitor is assessing colours and textures and bad light ruins a fabric. We always keep a proper table: in contract nothing is bought at the fair, it is specified, and the order arrives months later, so the stand has to allow time to talk and leave samples in the specifier's hand.
